Last year, the International Card Manufacturers Association announced that more than 20 billion plastic cards had been produced worldwide. Since 2006, more than 10 billion gift cards have been made each year. Tiny, compact cards are the favorite gifts of American consumers because of their versatility and value.

Most of the cards spent making their way to the landfills, adding millions of pounds of plastic and PVC to the waste stream. 10 billion gift cards, equal to only one year of average card revenue, will add nearly 100 million pounds of PVC to the world's landfill sites. Choosing eco-friendly gift card alternatives may help slow down the influx of plastic into garbage cans across the globe.

Nonetheless, there are more factors than the environmental obligation to select eco-friendly cards. A more informed consumer base prefers greener and more eco-friendly goods on a daily basis. High-quality, recyclable cards are available, such as biodegradable card materials, which put less pollutants in the atmosphere and make the faces of environmentally conscious consumers smile. Alternative card materials include pulp, corn, recycled PVC and Teslin.

Polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) is a promising option for more eco-friendly gift cards. Made from polyester, PETG is 100 % recyclable, biodegradable and non-gaseous. PETG is also easily adjustable due to its superior strength and versatility.

Eco-friendly plastic choices don't stop. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic is a recycled plastic material that is fully recyclable. ABS is also commonly considered to be more durable, longer-lasting and easier to recycle than PVC.

Cards made from recycled materials and renewable resources with plastic qualities are referred to as bio-plastics. These cards are biodegradable, compostable and considered environmentally friendly due to their non-oil-based materials.
