Why Choose a MIFARE Plus 2K RFID Card?
A smart card is more than a plastic card with an RFID antenna. The IC, memory organization, security configuration, antenna performance, printing quality, and personalization process all affect the final performance of an RFID card system.
MIFARE Plus 2K is designed around a sector-and-block memory architecture that is familiar to many MIFARE-based systems. This makes it particularly useful for organizations upgrading existing contactless card infrastructure while looking for a path toward stronger security.
Compared with simple RFID cards used mainly for identification, MIFARE Plus cards can support applications where card data and authentication need to be managed more carefully.
Key benefits include:
- Original NXP MIFARE Plus IC
- 2 KB non-volatile memory
- 7-byte UID option
- 13.56 MHz contactless communication
- ISO/IEC 14443 Type A interface
- Sector-based memory organization
- Support for secure authentication mechanisms
- Suitable for migration-oriented card system designs
- Custom printing and personalization
- Multiple card materials and finishing options
- Suitable for high-volume OEM and project orders
MIFARE Plus 2K Memory Structure
The 2K version of MIFARE Plus uses a block and sector organization derived from the MIFARE architecture. The 2 KB EEPROM is organized into 32 sectors, with each sector containing four 16-byte blocks.
The sector-based structure is useful for applications that need to separate different types of data or define access conditions for individual sectors.
| Memory Item | MIFARE Plus 2K |
|---|---|
| Total EEPROM | 2,048 bytes |
| Number of sectors | 32 |
| Blocks per sector | 4 |
| Block size | 16 bytes |
| Memory organization | Sector / block |
| Access control | Configurable by application |
| UID | 7-byte option |
The actual amount of memory available for application data depends on how the card is configured because certain blocks are used for manufacturer information, keys, access conditions, and other system functions.
For this reason, 2 KB EEPROM should not automatically be interpreted as 2 KB of freely available user data. Your reader and card software should be designed around the actual memory map and security configuration of the selected IC.
MIFARE Plus Security
Security is one of the main reasons organizations choose MIFARE Plus technology instead of a basic RFID identification chip.
MIFARE Plus supports security levels that can provide a migration path from legacy MIFARE Classic-based systems toward stronger security. Depending on the specific MIFARE Plus version and configuration, AES-based security can be used for authentication, data integrity, and communication protection.
This architecture is especially useful for organizations that already have a large installed card and reader infrastructure.
Instead of replacing an entire contactless system at once, a migration strategy can allow card technology and system security to be upgraded in stages.
For security-sensitive projects, card security should always be evaluated as part of the complete system. The reader, secure key management, backend software, card personalization, authentication process, and access-control policy all contribute to the final security level.
MIFARE Plus X vs MIFARE Plus S
MIFARE Plus has been offered in different variants, including MIFARE Plus X and MIFARE Plus S. They are not identical products and should not be selected solely based on the same memory capacity.
| Feature | MIFARE Plus X | MIFARE Plus S |
|---|---|---|
| Typical positioning | Flexible security and command configuration | Straightforward migration |
| Memory options | 2K / 4K | 2K / 4K |
| MIFARE Classic migration | Yes | Yes |
| AES security | Supported | Supported |
| Proximity check | Supported in relevant security configuration | Not the main positioning |
| Typical use | Customized secure applications | Legacy system migration |
MIFARE Plus X was designed to provide additional flexibility for optimizing command flow, speed, and confidentiality, including proximity-check functionality. MIFARE Plus S was positioned as a more straightforward option for migration from MIFARE Classic systems.
Important: NXP currently lists MIFARE Plus S 2K/4K as no longer manufactured. If your project specifically requires MIFARE Plus S, availability and replacement options should therefore be confirmed before ordering. For new projects, ask us to confirm the currently available NXP chip version before production.
MIFARE Plus 2K vs MIFARE Classic 1K
MIFARE Plus is often considered when an existing system is based on MIFARE Classic technology and the customer wants to improve the security architecture without completely redesigning the card infrastructure.
| Feature | MIFARE Classic 1K | MIFARE Plus 2K |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 1 KB | 2 KB |
| Frequency | 13.56 MHz | 13.56 MHz |
| Interface | ISO/IEC 14443 Type A | ISO/IEC 14443 Type A |
| Memory structure | Sector / block | Sector / block |
| Typical UID | 4-byte / 7-byte options depending on IC | 7-byte option |
| Security technology | Crypto1-based | AES-based security available in supported configurations |
| Migration potential | Legacy platform | Designed for migration from MIFARE Classic |
| Typical applications | Access, transport, identification | Secure access, transport, migration projects |
The two technologies are related, but they should not be treated as interchangeable cards in every system. Reader firmware, authentication commands, keys, security level, card configuration, and backend software must all be checked before replacing one card type with another.
MIFARE Plus 2K vs Other RFID Card Technologies
Choosing an RFID card depends on the required memory, security, compatibility, and application architecture.
| Card Technology | Memory Range | Typical Strength | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIFARE Classic 1K | 1 KB | Mature legacy ecosystem | Access control, ID cards |
| MIFARE Plus 2K | 2 KB | Migration and enhanced security | Access, campus, transport |
| NTAG213 | 144 bytes | Simple NFC interaction | Marketing, smart labels |
| NTAG215 | 504 bytes | NFC data storage | Product interaction, NFC |
| NTAG216 | 888 bytes | Larger NFC memory | Digital information, NFC |
